Polymer Electronics Research Laboratory

The Polymer Electronics research laboratory led by Dr. Abolhasani is dedicated to pioneering advanced polymer electronic materials and devices, focusing on developing sustainable energy solutions for the expanding Internet of Things (IoT). We are driven by a fundamental understanding of the intricate relationship between polymer structure and electronic properties, leveraging this knowledge to design and fabricate innovative materials for energy harvesting, storage, and sensing. Our research explores the creation of high-performance triboelectric, piezoelectric, and bio-based nanogenerators, tailored for applications in human-machine interfaces, wearable electronics, implantable medical devices, and distributed IoT sensors. We meticulously control polymer morphology to maximize energy conversion efficiency, achieving significant enhancements in power output through strategic material design and processing.
Furthermore, we address the critical need for efficient energy storage in self-powered systems by developing nanocomposites with high dielectric constants. Our research focuses on achieving uniform nanoparticle dispersion within polymer matrices to create high-energy-density capacitors capable of directly powering IoT devices. We integrate energy harvesting and storage functionalities into fully autonomous devices, such as electronic textiles, e-skins, and self-powered sensors, aiming to create systems that operate independently. Our approach combines theoretical modeling with experimental validation, allowing us to predict and optimize material behavior before synthesis. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of polymer electronics to enable a future where IoT devices operate sustainably and reliably.
